The Primacoustic VoxGuard is a high performance ambient noise absorber designed to surround the microphone and reduce unwanted sounds from contaminating the recording. This nearfield absorber works by creating an acoustic boundary around the microphone that at once contains the voice while eliminating room reflections.
Unlike other similar offerings that employ complex steel parts that are both heavy and cumbersome, the VoxGuard is light weight and extremely easy to use. It starts with a high-impact ABS outer surround shell that snugs onto the mic stand using an included adapter to hold it in place. The light weight design makes positioning the VoxGuard easy without the usual fear of the stand falling over which could ultimately damage the microphone.
This makes the VoxGuard effective when used with round base stands, tripods and even with large studio booms. Once mounted, an innovative rear access cable port allows the microphone to be articulated and directed at a specific source, thus enabling the VoxGuard to also be used as an acoustic screen.
The acoustic magic is performed by a high-density open cell acoustic foam liner. This effectively absorbs the voice range while keeping room ambiance out to produce a dry rendering. This is particularly important when attempting to record in rooms with less than ideal acoustics or in noisy spaces. Since the VoxGuard is 50% larger than comparable products, noise flanking is significantly reduced and performance vastly improved.
The VoxGuard is ideal for recording studio vocals, voice-over tracks for film and TV post production, pod casting and field reporting.

How does the VoxGuard work? Ambient room attenuators like the VoxGuard work by attempting to eliminate as much of the room ambiance as possible so that the microphone only captures the sound of the voice. This allows the engineer to introduce effects such as reverb or echo during the production phase.
You say the VoxGuard is larger. Why does this matter? Yes. The VoxGuard is up to twice as large as competitive products. The larger the absorptive area you can create around the microphone, the greater the absorption you will enjoy and less of the ambient noise will enter the microphone from flanking.
Can you explain flanking? Flanking is a term used by acousticians that refers to how sound will come over an acoustic divider or boundary and wrap around it. By increasing the size of the divider, you make the boundary more difficult for unwanted sound to flank. Today, highways are often flanked with walls designed to keep traffic noise contained. Some have reflective shields that angle inward towards the traffic to further reduce flanking. The VoxGuard employs the same scientific approach.
Does weight matter with near-field absorber? Increasing weight by increasing the density of the acoustic panels will generally improve the low frequency absorption. Thus the reason we employ high density open cell acoustic foam. But as anyone who has some technical background knows, deep low frequencies have long wavelengths that are both omnidirectional and generally more powerful than high frequencies. This means that they will generally pass through or go around most devices and will be almost impossible to control. As such, the VoxGuard is intended to control the voice range, not bass. Is the VoxGuard stable? I have seen others fall down and damage the microphone. When we set about to improve the designs that are already on the market, the first thing we wanted to do was address the problems that many have encountered such as the heavy metal fittings that are impossible to tighten and often cause the microphone stand to become unstable. We started by eliminating any unnecessary weight from the absorptive shield. Then we balanced the VoxGuard shield so that the center of gravity would be work with a typical recording microphone. Not only is it significantly more stable than the competition, because of the light weight, the VoxGuard is able to be employed in many more applications. Other brands use metal, does this help? They look cool and give you the impression that they are technically advanced. We feel that form, function and performance are more important than visual appeal. |

The VoxGuard is a simple device designed to control the ambiance around a microphone. The usual setup is to place the VoxGuard onto a mic stand using the threaded adapter that is supplied to hold the VoxGuard in place.
